11 - Flying History & SA227 Classic Cargo

Optional historical aviation archive and low-effort flight-simulator profile. Revisit the owner's 1992–1994 training, PA-31 and SA227/Metroliner cargo flights (Ameriflight), aircraft registrations, logbook evidence, period cockpit photos and selected historical routes. No dedicated Metroliner cockpit build; reuse the universal cockpit with simplified analogue displays in X-Plane 12. Keep historic facts, recollections, research assumptions and future plans explicitly separate.

Try a nostalgic SA227 cargo flight in X-Plane 12 using existing cockpit hardware T-372 Open LAAG

Optional, non-blocking experiment after the DA62/Phenom center console is usable. Verify available/compatible XP12 Metroliner III add-on and basic aircraft operation; fly a short historically inspired cargo route (first choice CVG–ILN–CVG, logbook calls it WIL, 5 Feb 1994 N242DH). Start with virtual cockpit and existing controls; check throttle/speed-lever mapping, X-Plane datarefs, legibility and practical gauges. Only if enjoyable, sketch one compact cockpit profile: left 10.4-inch analog six-pack, right 10.4-inch engine indications, 7-inch touch for avionics. NO separate Metro cockpit hardware, no manufactured analog clocks and no implementation/deployment implied by this task. Model is SA227-AC approximation, not exact historical SA227-AT.

Decision — SA227 Classic Cargo is a lightweight XP12 profile, not a cockpit build

USER'S EXPLICIT DECISION (4 NOVEMBER 2026) The objective is enjoyment and nostalgia: fly a few routes from 1993–94, NOT faithfully rebuild a Metro/Merlin cockpit. Prefer a simplified analogue panel with essential instruments. DA62 / Phenom 300 remain the primary cockpit hardware profiles. Keep SA227 work optional and low priority. CANDIDATE SIMULATORS (REVERIFY RELEASE/COMPATIBILITY BEFORE USE) • X-Plane 12 preferred for this experiment. Retro Wings SA227-AC Metroliner III project was previously identified as under development, release unconfirmed; Starvingpilot freeware Metro III is an XP11 design some report running on XP12, but must be tested. • Candidate Metroliner III (SA227-AC) differs from historical SA227-AT Expediter/Merlin IVC operated in the eight N24xDH registrations; flying a Metro III is a practical approximation, not historically exact. • No promise of a suitable MSFS 2024 aircraft. SIMPLIFIED UNIVERSAL COCKPIT PLAN • Existing 10.4-inch LEFT display: readable basic analogue six-pack (IAS, attitude, ALT, VSI, heading/HSI and turn coordinator) instead of a fully reproduced instrument panel. • Existing 10.4-inch RIGHT display: essential engine indications, fuel, caution/annunciator overview as available. • Existing 7-inch touchscreen: COM/NAV, autopilot and optional GPS/utility menus. • Modular center console: 2 power levers plus 2 speed levers if compatible with the future mechanical layout; turboprop TPE331 does NOT use separate piston-engine mixture levers. Flaps/trim/gear via shared hardware where suitable. Do not redesign the console solely for SA227. • First stage: virtual cockpit / basic mapping on chosen XP12 model; optional later stage: custom compact gauges using available X-Plane datarefs, Cockpit Broker and separate renderer / GlassOut approach. Verify model-specific datarefs before implementing. • No new panel manufacturing or complicated gauge reproduction until aircraft flyability and motivation are demonstrated. PREMISE The route, atmosphere and familiar airplane matter more than 100% hardware authenticity. No urgent deliverables, no dependency that blocks DA62/Phenom plans.

Ameriflight SA227 fleet, cargo routes and photographs — 1993/94

OWNER'S FIRST-HAND HISTORY Period: December 1993 through May 1994, operating as trainee/copilot on cargo flights. Home base: New Orleans (MSY). The SA227 aircraft were painted in blue Ameriflight colors by then, despite some secondary sources showing formal ownership/transfer in March 1995. OWNER'S EIGHT SA227-AT EXPEDITER / MERLIN IVC REGISTRATIONS N240DH, N241DH, N242DH, N243DH, N244DH, N245DH, N247DH, N248DH. (N246DH was NOT in the owner's list; don't silently add it.) REPORTED AIRPORT NETWORK ROC Rochester, BUF Buffalo, CVG Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, SYR Syracuse, MSY New Orleans (base), MEM Memphis, BNA Nashville, LIT Little Rock, BHM Birmingham, WIL (handwritten code), HSV Huntsville, BTR Baton Rouge, CMH Columbus. Do NOT infer each pairing/sequence as a logged nonstop leg: only destinations/locations are confirmed from recollection. CONCRETE LOGBOOK ROUTE 5 February 1994, N242DH: CVG → 'WIL' 0:36; 'WIL' → CVG 0:30. 'WIL' most likely refers to Wilmington Air Park, Ohio (KILN/ILN), about 30 minutes flying from CVG. This is a plausible identification, NOT a proven official airport-code match (WIL is not ILN). OTHER REGISTRATION N473AF, flight reportedly 29 November 1993 BFI → PDX → OAK. Earlier web research suggested SA227-AC Metro III s/n AC-473, rather than the owner's initial Merlin III recollection; verify before treating this as definitive. LATER HISTORY / RESEARCH LEADS (NOT FROM THE OWNER'S 1993 LOGBOOK) • N247DH suffered a serious crash at Pewaukee/Waukesha, Wisconsin on 15 November 2022; occupants survived according to previous research. Confirm primary accident source in any published historical write-up. • N243DH had a reportedly repaired landing accident in 1986. • Histories reported 15 March 1995 for formal DHL → Ameriflight transfer; this conflicts with proven Ameriflight-era operations/colors in 1993–94, possibly reflecting a legal rather than operational transfer. Do not publish a definitive explanation without primary evidence. PERIOD PHOTOS Owner has original early-1990s photos of simulator cockpit, detailed grey analogue SA227-style instrument panel, yokes and power quadrant, aircraft in a hangar, and training portraits (some pictures taken in simulator near Seattle's Boeing Field). A red/white aircraft in the hangar photo has an uncertain number visible near its nose gear; do not identify as N247DH without independent proof. Original photos were provided in ChatGPT but are not yet Buildory artifacts. Any public upload should be intentional because Cockpit Platform is a public project. FUTURE HISTORIC FLIGHTS Recreate CVG → ILN → CVG with a N242DH-inspired scenario and MSY ↔ MEM; consider BFI → PDX → OAK in N473AF as a separate historically inspired flight. Honor the original recorded code 'WIL' in archives while selecting the likely modern airport KILN/ILN in the sim.

Flight training chronology (1992–1994) — logbook and personal recollections

PURPOSE Preserve the owner's own logbook evidence and recollections as historical context for optional nostalgia flights. These facts are from photographed logbook pages and statements in the associated ChatGPT conversation; some readings are tentative. Do not conflate logbook entries with external registry records. CHRONOLOGY • 17 and 24 September 1992: Cessna 150 PH-RWD, flights from Teuge (EHTE), Netherlands, in photographed logbook. • From 8 May 1993: USA light aircraft training: Cessna 152 flights with Flying W Airport (N14, New Jersey) frequently logged; other entries include N68739, N69726 and N757XQ. The 28 May 1993 N757XQ entry is annotated 'First Solo!'. • July–August 1993: Multi-engine training on Beechcraft BE-76 Duchess; logbook includes Frasca 122 simulator entries. • 14 September–8 November 1993: Piper PA-31 Navajo (PA-31-310) and Chieftain (PA-31-350), predominantly based at Oakland (OAK), with earlier flights from Burbank (BUR). Representative registrations visible in photographed pages: N777MP, N6733L, N7441L, N59820, N3553F, N3548B, N3BT, N961CA. Other registrations occur; use the original pages when compiling an exhaustive list. • 16–17 November 1993: first visible 'Merlin IVC' simulator entries, 4:00 each. Handwritten simulator ident looks like 'FS-MI4' / 'FS-MUC' / 'FS-MUL'; unreadable with certainty. Owner recalls simulator training near Boeing Field, Seattle. FlightSafety is a plausible but unverified operator/site identification. • 29 November 1993: owner's reported flight BFI–PDX–OAK in N473AF. Owner recalled 'Merlin III'; earlier fleet research suggests N473AF was an SA227-AC Metro III. Verify type/airframe identity against historic records rather than rewriting the logbook. • December 1993–May 1994: actual cargo operations as a copilot during training, on Ameriflight SA227s. Primary base New Orleans (MSY). Aircraft already had blue Ameriflight colors in this period according to first-hand recollection (important correction to online histories suggesting 1995-only transfer). PRIMARY MATERIAL User supplied multiple photographed handwritten logbook pages and original aviation photographs in the ChatGPT conversation (including cockpit/simulator images). These images have NOT been uploaded into Buildory by this entry; preserve originals and document provenance before reusing publicly. RULE: The date/type/registration information above should be checked against complete logbook pages before making an authoritative flight-by-flight database. Do not treat research hypotheses as confirmed historical facts.
